How the US and Israel coordinate operations to intercept `99% of Iranian missiles and UAVs`

(Dan Tri) – The Israeli army and its allies coordinated operations to intercept most of Iran’s 300 missiles and drones.

According to Israeli and US officials, almost all ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Iran at Israel in an unprecedented attack late on April 13 were intercepted and failed.

The majority of the more than 300 missiles and UAVs were launched from Iranian territory in a five-hour attack.

The Israeli military claimed `99%` of projectiles launched by Iran were intercepted by Israel and its partners, with only a `small number` of ballistic missiles reaching Israel.

The Israeli military estimates that a total of about 170 drones, more than 30 cruise missiles and more than 120 ballistic missiles were launched by Iran into Israel overnight.

US officials said more than 70 drones and three ballistic missiles were intercepted by US naval ships and military aircraft, but did not detail which defense system was used to shoot them down.

According to officials at the Pentagon, the US Navy shot down at least three ballistic missiles, using the Aegis missile defense system on two guided missile destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean.

US warplanes also shot down Iranian drones and missiles.

President Joe Biden said in a statement that the United States is well prepared to help defend Israel against an Iranian attack.

`To support Israel’s defense, the US military dispatched aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the area over the past week,` President Biden said.

`Thanks to these deployments and the remarkable skill of our soldiers, we helped Israel take down nearly all incoming drones and missiles,` Mr. Biden announced.

Britain said it was also ready to intervene to support Israel by using Royal Air Force aircraft present in the area.

A statement from the British Ministry of Defense said: `These British fighter aircraft prevent any air strikes within the scope of our current mission.`

An Israeli military spokesman also said France was involved in preventing Iranian attacks.

`We are working closely with the US, UK and France, who have taken action tonight. This partnership has always been close, but tonight it shows itself in an extraordinary way,` the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Israel operates a series of systems to prevent attacks from Iranian missiles.

Israel’s Iron Dome system has frequently been in the spotlight since the country began its military campaign in the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

There are at least 10 Iron Dome batteries in Israel, each equipped with radar that detects missiles, which then uses a command and control system to quickly calculate whether an incoming missile poses a threat.

According to IMDO, the next layer in Israel’s missile defense system is David’s Sling, which helps fight short- and medium-range threats.

Israel also has modern combat aircraft, including the F-35I stealth aircraft, which it has previously used to shoot down drones and cruise missiles.

An Israeli military spokesman said ballistic missiles reaching Israel fell at Netavim air base in southern Israel and caused only minor damage.

Photos released by the Israeli Air Force show F-35 and F-15 fighter jets returning to their bases in Israel after performing `interception` and `air defense missions.`
